Afford to do sth.. 是在指，你能不能在时间上，金钱上，或精神上承担起某件事情的后果。

打个比方，你有一个很爱你的女朋友。有一天你突然想去逛夜店，可如果被女朋友知道了，会让她很不开心的。最后你朋友劝你还是别去了，告诉你 you can't afford to lose her. 因为你不能失去她。
